Shweta's mother is from West Bengal. Her father is from Bihar. Basu is her mother’s name before marriage. Prasad is her father’s last name. When Shweta was young, her family moved to Mumbai.

Early Career
Shweta started acting when she was a child. She played two roles in the movie Makdee in 2002. She won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for this role. After that, she acted in TV shows like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Karishma Kaa Karishma.
In 2005, she acted in the movie Iqbal. She played the role of Khadija. This role made her very famous. She won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Karachi International Film Festival for Iqbal.
Break and Further Studies
After Iqbal, Shweta took a break from acting. She wanted to study. She graduated in Journalism and Mass Media. After her studies, she made a movie called Roots. It was about Indian classical music. She spent four years making this movie. It featured famous musicians like Shubha Mudgal and A R Rahman. Shweta is trained in playing the Sitar. She is very interested in classical music.
Later Career
Shweta started acting in Telugu movies in 2008. Her first Telugu movie was Kotha Bangaru Lokam. She has also acted in Tamil and Bengali movies.
In 2016–2017, she played the main role in the TV show Chandra Nandni. She played Nandini, who was married to Chandragupta Maurya. She said that this show was her return to television.
In 2017, she was in the Hindi movie Badrinath Ki Dulhania. In 2019, she acted in The Tashkent Files. She played a journalist in this movie. People liked her performance very much. The movie did well in theaters.
